Five data centers in Dallas apparently isn’t enough anymore, so Equinix is going for a sixth. This morning they announced plans for a new IBX, which will go by the moniker DA7 and will help support growing demand for interconnection throughout the metro area.
The new facility will support 40K at full build, bringing Equinix’s Dallas-area footprint to 214K square feet. The first phase will just 300 cabinets of course, followed by another 800 by the middle of next year. They’ve already sold 200 cabinets, or nearly 1MW, to a Fortune 100 global manufacturing company.
While the company’s other facilities are located downtown, with four of them in the Infomart at 1950 North Stemmons Freeway, this new facility will be a few miles to the north in the suburb of Plano. Equinix plans to spend $20M to build out the new location.
And about that number 7. If you’re like me and immediately wondered why Equinix is calling its 6th facility in the Dallas metro area by a name ending in 7, it’s because Equinix sold the one it used to call DA5 at 4101 Bryan to 365 Data Centers some three years ago.
