iBASIS STRENGTHENS APAC FOOTPRINT WITH NEW TOKYO IPX PoP

  • October 20, 2025

iBASIS, the leading provider of communications solutions for operators and digital players worldwide, today announced the establishment of a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Tokyo, Japan—its 14th worldwide and third in the Asia-Pacific region. This development is part of a broader plan to expand its IPX infrastructure and capabilities in Asia to meet the growing demand for roaming and cross-border data services.

“Establishing a presence in Tokyo brings us closer to key markets and expands inter-Asia paths, ensuring reliable performance for roaming and next-generation services,” said Ajay Joseph, CTO at iBASIS. “This step aligns with our broader deployment roadmap and will complement our recent expansion in the region with the acquisition of Telstra International ’s wholesale voice, IPX, and messaging assets.”*

As data traffic and international connectivity needs increase, operators are seeking more direct routes, greater resilience in network architecture, and lower latency. As latency increasingly influences the quality of the roaming experience, the new PoP enables network operators to deliver a broader range of services including real-time IoT and 5G applications while maintaining consistent cross-border connectivity and reliability.

“Japan’s strategic role in global internet infrastructure is underscored by its position as a critical junction for advanced telecom services. As a major data traffic hub, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan’s significance extends beyond domestic demand. Its status as a transit and innovation center makes it a logical location for direct IPX presence, facilitating enhanced connectivity and service delivery across the region,” said Nitin Bhas, Chief of Strategy & Insights at Kaleido Intelligence.

The new PoP allows iBASIS to provide an extensive range of services, including all IPX services, VoLTE conversion services, and Roaming Hub-Breakout services in the region.

The new PoP will be operational and ready to serve customers in Japan and throughout East Asia from December 2025.

In 2025, iBASIS has been recognized as the Leading Tier One IPX Network by ROCCO and will showcase its latest advancements in global connectivity and network deployments in Rome at GSMA WAS#22, Meeting Room Reiz, October 20-23, 2025.
