Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre (also known as Telecentras), which provides telecoms services under the MEZON brand name, has announced the commercial launch of 4G LTE services in the capital Vilnius. In September the state-owned company revealed it had contracted Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to migrate its existing WiMAX networks to a new LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) platform, which was switched on in Klaipeda, Taurage, Telsiai, Utena, Alytus and Anyksciai two months later. Telecentras has begun to transfer its customers in the upgraded coverage areas to the new network, which will be expanded to other cities in the future.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Telecentras launched its MEZON mobile WiMAX service in Vilnius in early March 2009, and quickly went on to deploy networks in Panevezys, Klaipeda, Siauliai and the second largest city Kaunas. Services were gradually expanded to around 100 cities, towns and villages, representing roughly 70% of the population.
